"Creating high-quality footwear for all occasions with the consumer's health benefits in mind" is the driving force behind Birkenstock Papillio that has been the company's motto since its beginnings. Birkenstock was founded in a small village in Germany in 1774 by Johann Birkenstock. It was his grandson Konrad, however, who in 1897 changed the shape of footwear by developing contoured footwear to match the soles of our feet.
Prior to this development, shoes had always been flat inside. While vacationing in Germany in 1966, American Margot Fraser immediately fell in love with Birkenstocks and began importing the sandals stateside upon her return home. Birkenstock USA is now 100% employee owned and continues the tradition of the original company.
